Poetry Coaching & Manuscript Editing
I have been editing poems since I first put pen to paper. I am keen to help you locate the strong pulse in your own poems-- what works, and how to keep it working. And how to walk away from the duds. Having won three national book awards for my books, I have a trustworthy eye for the structure of the book-- for what strengthens the manuscript and what might sink it.
Specialties and inclinations: humor in the work, the "drive to connect" finding the alteriority, the underside; keeping the reader's attention; saying what you need to say; writing the political without being polemic, moving the reader to open, to see beneath the surface, to move with those currents, to locate the universal, to say something that bears saying-- i.e. to do what you would hope to do in your poems. I am a stickler for concision, for the right word in the right place, for show but don't tell, for the music in the language, for making the poem sing down the page, for creating context, for making the reader care, for moving us out of our chairs, our doldrums, our sloughs of despond and out into something bigger, grander.
You should also know I am a leftie, a lesbian-feminist, a queer folk and a long-time ago hippie mother of two. I live in Vermont and shepherd my aging dog from field to stream to lake and back again home, and as Ferlinghetti wrote, "I am constantly awaking the rebirth of wonder" everywhere.
How to proceed: email carilpo@gmail.com to see if there's availability. We begin by you first sending me a sample of your work. Then if there's space and artistic compatibility, we can proceed from there.
Rates: 20.00 a page/ or 20.00 a poem. Manuscript consultations: Price to be negotiated.
“Poetry is not a discipline. It is a hunger, a revolt, a drive, a mash note, a fright, a tantrum, a grief, a hoax, a debacle, an application, an affect.” Dean Young, from The Art of Recklesness
